STORY: Rahul (Karan Deal), Ramesh aka Rambo (Savant Singh Premi) and Rajeshwar aka Raju (Visshesh Tiwari) are best friends and backbenchers in their school. During one of their antics, the trio bump into Riya (Anya Singh) the school principal, Radhe Shyam’s (Zakir Hussain) daughter who’s more interested in dance and performing arts than her books. On the other hand, Rishi Singh (Abhay Deol), an aspiring director, meets film star Rohini (Mouni Roy) to narrate his debut film. What happens when the paths of these six characters cross that of three criminals, forms the crux of this story.

REVIEW: The film is the Hindi remake of the coming-of-age Telugu original, Brochevaruevarura (2019), which also inspired a Kannada version, Govinda Govinda, that was released a fortnight ago. Velle begins with three criminals discussing their plan of making some quick money and soon kidnap a girl (Riya, later revealed) for ransom. Cut to a five-star hotel where Rishi is meeting a film producer for his realistic and hard-hitting subject. But things don’t materialise and he decides to go about his film in his own way.

Director Deven Munjal has chosen an interesting subject from the South to remake in Hindi. However, like its inspiration, the modified version isn’t flawless. The first half seems to be taking the film’s title too seriously and is a little too ‘chilled out’ and meandering. It’s only at the interval point when more things happen, and the movie moves into higher gear. And the second half more than makes up for the ‘vellapanti’-filled first and also keeps you glued to the screen proceedings even though you half-anticipate them.

Abhay Deol is easily the best part of this film. Whatever the scene, he essays his part with great conviction and dignity, making you wonder why aren’t filmmakers coming up with better subjects and roles for this wonderful actor. So, whenever he does take up a project, which isn’t too often, it’s indeed refreshing to see him on screen after what seems like a long time. As the film star Rohini, Mouni Roy has limited scope to perform. Nonetheless, she lights up the screen every time she appears in the film.

Karan Deol puts in a sincere effort in playing the chilled-out Rahul. And it’s in the second half that he seems more comfortable in his role and breezes through without much ado as his character comes of age as the story progresses. Anya Singh aptly plays the dainty Riya, while Savant Singh Premi and Visshesh Tiwari lend due support as the friends, Rambo and Raju.

Zakir Hussain does well as the school principal and Riya’s father, while Mahesh Thakur is too over-the-top as Rahul’s dad. Rajesh Kumar (Rosesh of Sarabhai vs Sarabhai) is okay as the cop and Radhe Shyam’s friend.

To sum up, Velle has some good moments. But one can’t help wishing the first half played out better, instead of making the post-interval part look like a different movie altogether.
