When The Girl on the Train, a psychological thriller novel by British author Paula Hawkins first came out in 2015, readers lapped it up like it was manna from heaven. She was hailed as the new voice in British crime writing. Her book, which was mostly about an alcoholic woman struggling to come to grips with reality, felt like a realistic piece about real world problems. The murder mystery portions felt secondary. You were drawn in the protagonists' world and groaned when she unnecessarily barged into the police investigation. You lauded her attempts on recreating her memory and wanted her to win the battle, even as you dreaded she might not like what she saw at the end of the tunnel. It was a crazy romp inside someone’s head, a wildly enjoyable ride. So you got excited when director Tate Taylor cast Emily Blunt and came out with the film version the next year. The film was set in New York instead of England and while Blunt did a commendable job as the protagonist, the film paled in comparison to the source material. Some books can’t be faithfully translated into films and it proved to be the case here as well.

You hoped that director Ribhu Dasgupta would come out with a better treatment in the Hindi version but sadly that didn’t happen. What he has done is to set the story back in England but sadly has taken much liberties with the novel. The end, in particular, has been completely changed. Like Taylor, Dasgupta too has failed to faithfully translate the inner angst, conflict, confusion of the protagonist.

Mira Kapoor (Parineeti Chopra) is an attorney married to Shekhar Kapoor (Avinash Tiwary). Everything seems to be going well -- she has a flourishing career, a loving husband, she’s pregnant -- till it all goes down the drain one day when they have an accident. She has a miscarriage. The husband divorces her for another woman and she becomes a hopeless alcoholic. She commutes aimlessly in trains, making up fantasy lifes for people she sees from the picture windows. One such woman she sees is Nusrat (Aditi Rao Hydari). Mira is convinced Nusrat is having the perfect life. One day, Nusrat goes missing and later is found murdered. The police are on Mira’s trail as they feel she’s got something to do with it.

England is said to be the place saturated with the maximum amounts of security cameras and yet Mira is able to romp through London and the surrounding suburbs without ever falling in the net of the police. Apart from that, the screenplay makes it too easy for her to piece together the clues. One feels she's a female Sherlock Holmes, solving the case better than the police even in her recovering alcoholic state. Some of the plot points are unintentionally hilarious indeed.

Like Emily Blunt before her, Parineeti Chopra has given her all to the film. Her commitment to the project can’t be denied. She's the best thing about the film and gamely soldiers on but there’s only so much an actor can do on her own. Her efforts are to be lauded but she’s hugely let down by the weak writing and the direction. It seemed as if the director was plain unwilling to work with the material at hand and wanted to introduce his own version of events. Likewise, fine actors like Avinash Tiwary, Aditi Rao Hydari and Kriti Kulhari have also given earnest portrayals but suffer because of the lack of finesse in writing...
